Taoyuan boasts a rich and diverse ethnic composition, with groups such as Minnan, Hakka, indigenous peoples, communities from military dependents’ villages, people from Matsu, and New Immigrants. The convergence and interaction of these cultures have sparked a vibrant array of expressions and activities. To promote exchange and fusion among these ethnic groups, the City Government actively organizes various events. Particularly, Minnan culture is a crucial foundation of Taiwanese culture. It not only preserves many of the cultural traditions, philosophies, and customs of forefathers, reflecting different stages of development in Taiwan, but also is an integral part of everyday life for the general populace.
Taoyuan City Government, as the pioneer in Taiwan, established the first “Minnan Affairs Council” in 2016, inviting scholars and experts in the Minnan culture to offer their expertise. Through accumulation and preparation for a two-year period, “Minnan Culture Section” was established on 15 March 2018, dedicated to the promotion of the activities concerning Minnan and folk cultures in Taoyuan, which is also the very first local competent authority in Taiwan dedicated to the Minnan affairs. Taoyuan Minnan Festival, having been organized for years, will not only continue the highlight activities like Folklore Floats Parade, International Dragon-Lion Dance Invitational, Master Chef Bando Competition, Taoyuan Minnan Culture International Forum, and Art Array Showcase, but also strengthen the local connection with Minnan culture with Bakuaicuo Folk Art Village as the base, unceasingly building the special cultural brand of Taoyuan, offering quality cultural services to visitors, facilitating cultural exchanges between the international and local communities, and fostering a sense of identity among local residents. Meanwhile, an extensive network of diverse media is utilized as well to expand the scale of publicity, attract national media attention, and enhance the event’s effectiveness. This, in turn, will drive marketing for Taoyuan City and benefit the related tourism industry, thereby deepening the splendid impression of the Minnan culture within Taoyuan City’s multicultural landscape.
